The Nevada Economic Developers Association (NEDA) invites legislators, county commissioners, city council members, mayors, tribal leaders, and other elected officials to participate in Economic Development 101—a practical, half-day program designed to provide a foundational understanding of how economic development works and why it matters to every Nevada community. Whether your community is focused on job creation, workforce development, housing, infrastructure, small business growth, or attracting new investment, economic development plays a central role in achieving those goals. This interactive session will equip participants with the knowledge needed to make informed policy decisions and strengthen collaboration with economic development professionals across the state.

Participants will learn:

  • The fundamentals of modern economic development and its role in creating quality jobs and growing local economies.
  • How site selection decisions are made and what communities can do to compete for new business investment.
  • The respective roles of state, regional, and local economic development organizations—and how they work together.
  • Best practices in business attraction, business retention and expansion, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and community competitiveness.
  • How infrastructure, housing, education, transportation, permitting, and quality of life influence economic success.
  • Practical ways elected officials can support economic growth while protecting community priorities and fiscal responsibility.

Why Should Elected Officials Attend?

Economic development decisions shape the future of every community. From land use and infrastructure investments to workforce initiatives and business climate, elected leaders make decisions that directly influence economic opportunity, tax revenues, and residents' quality of life. This program provides the context needed to:

  • Better evaluate economic development proposals and public investments.
  • Understand the long-term economic impacts of policy decisions.
  • Build stronger partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and economic development professionals.
  • Gain insight into the factors businesses consider when choosing where to locate or expand.
  • Help position your community for sustainable economic growth and increased prosperity.

No previous economic development experience is required. Whether you are newly elected or an experienced public official, this course offers valuable insights that can immediately inform your work in public service. Join fellow leaders from across Nevada to gain a deeper understanding of the strategies, partnerships, and tools that help communities thrive.
